The Mets Win It!!
Cover your eyes Red Sox fans,
M&N has launched a series of jerseys to celebrate the 1986 Mets. The Mets beat the Red Sox in 7 games (with the most memorable one being game 6) to win the '86 World Series. You can find a selection of Mets jerseys (such as the Keith Hernandez one shown here) from the '86 season in this link

Building Your Closet
Every month, I shall be posting some tips on collecting throwback jerseys. This month's tips shall be on where to find throwbacks. Usually a sports specialty shop shall have a selection of throwbacks. The best for selection is Mitchell&Ness, however there are other stores and you can check out the ones in your area. However, the best source to find throwbacks as far as selection and price ranges is right here on the Net with ebay. If you have not entered the ebay universe as of yet, here is the link. Once you are registered (and it's easy and free to do so), you can search and bid on and buy just about anything that you wish. I have been a buyer on ebay for about ten years now and it is a great source for a collector, like myself, to find what they are looking for. You can either place a bid for an item, or use the Buy It Now option and buy it outright.
Buying throwbacks on ebay does come with some warnings though:
One: Know what you are looking for as there are a lot of fakes out there. For instance, there are a lot of throwback jerseys sold in Asia on ebay and sometimes the quality of the jersey is not that great. Sometimes there is a team logo on there when there should not be, the colors are a bit off...etc. At some point, I'll post a few pictures of a brand name player throwback (Reebok, M&N) next to one of the same player's throwback from an ebay auction from Asia just to show the difference. Now, if you just want a certain throwback and the quality of it is not that important to you, the throwbacks from Asia on ebay can be cheaper (though they do get you with the shipping sometimes). This is also not to say that all of the throwbacks on the ebay auctions from Asia are poorly made either as there are some really nice ones out there. You just have to do some research and know what you want.
Two: If bidding, be prepared to have a bidding war at times. As I've said, ebay is a great source on the Net to find and buy throwbacks, however ebay is also a very popular site and with the fact that throwbacks are popular also...put two and two together and you have a lot of people looking for the same thing in one place and can you say Black Friday every day of the year? It can be like that at times to be the winning bidder on something. My best suggestion to avoid this is to shop around on ebay. With this I mean say you want a Wyane Gretzky Oilers throwback jersey...do a search for it and see what's up there. If there is a jersey that's getting a good amount of bids, there's a good chance that there is another one that is not. Sometimes even ending the same night and those who are fighting over the one, might not see it and...bingo...yours without a bidding war. Or, there could be one with the Buy It Now feature that's going cheaper than the one (or more) that has bidding wars for them. Now, if money does not mean that much to you, than this tip means little...however to those out there, like myself, who want to save a few bucks, shop around as it does work.
Finally, bidding on ebay can be addictive so know your limits :)

The Hot Jersey at Mitchell&Ness..."The Great One"
So, who's throwback is the hot seller at Mitchell&Ness as of today (2-7-07)? "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky's 1993 L.A. Kings Stanley Cup Finals throwback jersey. This jersey is on top of Mitchell&Ness' Top Seller List.
In 1993 the Kings lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Montreal Canadians. None the less, Gretzky brought hockey to the West Coast and the Great Western Forum was packed with people not only to watch Magic Johnson and the "Showtime" Lakers, but to watch Wayne Gretzky and the Kings. This is a cool jersey and I saw it as I was in Mitchell&Ness in Philly for their Super Bowl Sale. As all M&N jerseys do, this jersey has great detail and features the 1993 Cup Finals patch on it that the Kings and Canadians wore on their jerseys for the Finals. M&N launched this jersey as part of their Vintage Hockey line and it's been a great hit.

Throwback News: Some All-Star "Magic"
In 1991, Lakers guard Magic Johnson won the MVP award in the NBA All-Star Game. It was "The Magic Man's" finest performance in an All-Star game and one that shall always be remembered. Mitchell&Ness shall soon issue a throwback Magic Johnson 1991 NBA All-Star jersey. This jersey is a true classic :)

The Richmond and Mullin 1991 throwback jerseys
Throwback News: "Run TMC" Warriors Throwbacks on the Way
In 1991, the Golden State Warriors were a team on the rise. Why? "Run TMC" (Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin) were three teammates who each had great talents and knew how to find one another on the court. Hardaway had his "Killer Crossover" and Richmond and Mullin could hit any shoot. The three were eventually moved and had success with different teams, but the Warriors have yet to be the same. Now you can re-live the "Run TMC" days with these throwbacks on the way from
Mitchell&Ness.

Throwback News: Mavs Sharp-Shooter to get a Throwback
Throwback News: Iverson's Alternate Sixers Jersey from M&N
In 1997 the NBA celebrated it's 50th anniversary. Many teams wore throwback jerseys of different eras in their history for a few games. Mitchell&Ness has issued an Allen Iverson throwback jersey from this season that's a throwback in itself, as it's the throwback jersey of the 60's era that Allen and the Sixers wore for a few games.

Throwback News: Vince Carter's Rookie Year Jersey in the Works
Vince Carter has been one of the more dominant scorers in the NBA since he burst onto the scene in 1999 with the Toronto Raptors. Mitchell&Ness has issued a Vince Carter Raptors jersey from the 1999 season (he also took home the Rookie of the Year award in the NBA that year). This is a cool jersey and has the Raptors logo on the front. If you are a fan of the Raptors, or Vince, you gotta get your hands (or claws) on this one :)

Throwback News: 2 Time NBA MVP Steve Nash Suns Throwback in the works
The NBA's currant back-to-back MVP award winner, Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns, shall soon have a throwback jersey made by Mitchell&Ness. This throwback jersey shall be his 1997 Suns jersey. The Suns drafted Nash in the 1st round of the 1996 NBA draft. He spent a few season there before being traded to Dallas and soon after helped the Mavs make the post-season and have some success. A few years later he was dealt back to the Suns and became a two-time league MVP and household name.
This is a Hot jersey and should soon become a top seller for M&N I'm sure.

A bit on me and this blog
Hello to all out there in Syber Space and welcome to my blog, Throwback Jersey Collector's Journal :) This blog is going to be about...well...what it says it is. This is a blog for sports fans, like myself, who (also like myself) have taken an interest in the world of throwback sports jerseys. As we know, NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB throwback jerseys have been a HUGE hit in the world of sports collecting and showing off your fandom for your team. I myself am a big fan of all four Philly team (Sixers, Eagles, Flyers and Phillies) and...yes...I am still waiting for that elusive championship and am also a big sports fan in general. I am also a collector of things from Mighty Mouse to baseball style hats and sports jerseys (baseball, football, basketball and hockey). I've been a collector of jerseys since I was in Jr. High. My first love in sports was basketball and was a HUGE Bulls fan, as well as Sixers fan, growing up. At that time, my basketball idol was Scottie Pippen and hence first jersey was a Bulls Scottie Pippen jersey. Years later and about 80-90 jerseys later (I never really counted them all) the collection is what it is today.
A few years back, I started collecting throwback jerseys due to the fact that the currant players change teams all too often. I collected local player throwbacks such as Dr. J (Sixers), Mike Schmidt (Phillies), etc. However, I branched out and started to collect other throwbacks of players who I admired. The greats such as Hank Aaron, Walter Payton, Wyane Gretzky and such. I'm also foutunate to live close to the main store for Mitchell & Ness here in Philadelphia. Any true throwback jersey collector knows who Mitchell & Ness are as they are the leading brand and most respected name in the world of throwback sports wear. They started it all and if you have not had an opportunity to stop into their store here in Philly...you should. It's like walking into a museum. I first ventured into Mitchell & Ness a few years back and go in about 4-5 times a year now. I don't always buy a jersey in there, than again I'm not one of the more wealthy collectors and as, in the store, M&N throwbacks go from anywhere between $200-$400 and up, looking is just about all I can do most of the time (however I was able to pick up a few great throwbacks during their Super Bowl Sale last weekend). ebay is also a great source and one for fans like myself who are looking for a good deal, however you have to know that a good deal at times can be too good to be true and there are a lot of fakes out there...more on this in a later post.
Throwback Jersey Collector's Journal is going to feature news, info and a look into the world of collectors of throwbacks. This blog shall also feature what blogs do...opinions. I encourage fellow throwback, or modern, jersey collectors to share their stories and pics of thier collections on here also. Perhaps if some athletes, past or currant, stumble onto this blog....please feel free to share your stories also as it is your jerseys that we wear :)
Anyhow, enjoy the blog :)
